Opened in 2007 under the name of the Cité Nationale de l’Histoire de l'Immigration, le Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration, France’s National Museum of the History of Migration made a new start in 2023 after renovations. This paper analyzes how the history of the Musée national de l’histoire de l’émigration has changed over the years and discusses its link with social discourses surrounding migration and former colonies, using the materials collected at the Musée national de l'histoire de l'émigration, which the author visited in 2023, and research papers and media discourses about the museum. The National Museum of the History of Migration was established to collect, preserve and present documents related to the history of migration in France and to deepen understanding of the integration of migrants into French society. However, contrary to its founding principles, the museum itself has been heavily influenced by politics. Under the Sarkozy government in 2007, which aimed to tighten immigration policy, the committee members involved in creating the museum resigned to express their opposition; in 2010, the National Museum of Migration History was occupied by some 500 people in a demonstration aimed at improving the status of migrant undocumented workers. This led to a political debate on the relevance of migration policy. In response to changes in the social environment surrounding migration and the study of migration history, the permanent exhibition at the National Museum of the History of Migration from 2023 onwards changed its exhibition approach from a traditional thematic approach to a historical approach. Chronological and thematic exhibitions have been developed on the basis of the years considered important in the relationship between France and immigration. The cultural diversity of French society and how it has changed over time is presented on the basis of chronologies and historical documents, as well as testimonies, photographs, videos and works of art that allow visitors to envision the history of immigration. The exhibition attempts to portray individual migrants from multiple perspectives.Ritsu TANIGUCHIThe Shifting Perspective toward Former Colonies and Immigration in France: Focusing on the Transition of the National Museum of the History of Immigration145
