193The Tung Wen College (TōA Dōbun Shoin) and the International from the viewpoint of the International Network of Peace Student Fellowship of Shanghai:Education/MovementThis paper investigates the International Student Fellowship of Shanghai (ISF), which was active from the mid-1920s until the early 1930s. The ISF was established on June 7, 1924, as a fellowship group that enrolled students from various nations in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. The organization consisted mainly of Christian educational institutes from Europe and the United States, as well as the TōA Dōbun Shoin (東亜同文書院, the Tung Wen College) from Japan. With the objective of promoting universal love and world peace, the ISF organized an assortment of social gatherings, including lectures, debates, concerts, theatrical performances, dance shows, picnics, and other leisure activities. Additionally, local delicacies from the participating countries were served to foster and strengthen cordial ties transcending national and ethnic borders. To date, only one study has examined ISF, with a specific focus on its social activities, notably as a site for interactions between young men and women. In contrast, the objective of this research is to reposition the ISF as an active organization within the international peace movement, rather than merely as a social club for students. Emphasis should be placed on its close relationship with the Fellowship of Reconciliation (FOR), an international NGO that supports nonviolence and peace initiatives. This paper highlights the significant role of the ISF as a hub for the global grassroots movement for world peace in the Asia-Pacific region, in conjunction with the FOR.The essay demonstrates that Professor Yoshitaka Sakamoto (坂本義孝), a key member of the ISF since its inception and an active member of Yūwa-Kai (友和会, FOR in Japan), played a pivotal role in the peace movement’s development, fostering connections between Japan, China, Europe, and the United States. In conclusion, this study reveals a hidden vein of peace education amidst the global crisis of war, offering novel insights into the activities of the ISF.Kenichiro SHIMIZU
