211Trends and the ways of handling the teaching materials for Chinese classics in the Japanese language subjects “Language Culture” and “Advanced Classics” at high schoolThis paper discusses the trends and teaching method for kanbun (Chinese classics in Japan)teaching materials in the subjects “Language Culture” and “Advanced Classics,” based on the discussions of the research group on the theme of the study of teaching materials in “Language Culture.” The “Course of Study of Japanese Language for the Senior High Schools,” published in 2008 (hereinafter referred to as the current revision), established a new common compulsory subject, “Language Culture,” and a new elective subject, “Advanced Classics,” to deepen students’ understanding of Japanese language and culture, and to furthermore cultivate their awareness as bearers of it. Notably, the current revision explicitly states the appropriate use of “Japanese kanbun” (Chinese classics created by Japanese people) as a teaching material for the subject “Language Culture.”Therefore, the characteristics of the subjects “Language Culture” and “Advanced Classics” were first described, and the type of material to be handled was indicated based on the “Courses of Study.” In addition to this, we surveyed the Chinese Classics materials actually adopted and compared them with the materials adopted in the previous Japanese subjects. In particular, “Japanese kanbun” was shown separately from the teaching materials for Chinese classical works, and the status of its adoption was analyzed. The results showed that, overall, there was almost a complete overlap with the previous material, but it was also clear that in “Language Culture,” the number of points for “Japanese kanbun,” which had previously been adopted for only one point, increased to approximately 27 points. This is one of the changes resulting from the current revision.Next, the language activities in the textbook materials for the newly established subjects were investigated and analyzed to see what differences could be observed in comparison with the previous materials. Furthermore, the opinions and questions raised by the research group in response to these surveys and analyses are discussed, and the need for the development of teaching materials beyond the traditional framework of texts for the subjects ‘Japanese Classics’ and ‘Chinese Classics’ is stated.Through the new subjects, we propose that the study of “kanbun” should not be limited to an understanding of Japanese culture but should also provide an opportunity to look at the positioning of Japan within East Asia.Kyoko HAYASHI
