210Outdoor education and camp schools in Toyama prefecture during Focusing on practice at elementary schools in Toyama Citythe Meiji and Taisho eras: The purpose of this paper is to clarify the activities and educational significance of outdoor education and the so-called "camp schools" implemented by elementary schools in Toyama City from the Meiji period to the Taisho period. In Toyama Prefecture, practical experience in outdoor education was accumulated from the middle of the Meiji period to the Taisho period, and the need for a camp school and alternative activities was shared. In other words, it can be said that a practical foundation for holding a camp school was formed. After that, with the subsidy provided by Toyama Prefecture in 1921, several schools, mainly elementary schools in the prefecture, started rinkai kyoiku (literally, “seaside education”) on a trial basis. This paper clarifies the educational objectives and activities of the rinkai kyoiku held by the elementary school attached to Toyama Prefectural Normal School and the rinkai kyoiku held jointly by the public elementary schools in Toyama City. As a result, it was found that both practices positioned training such as swimming practice as the main activity, and tried experiential learning using local teaching materials. It became clear that the camp school in Toyama Prefecture was a unique camp school, unlike the camp schools which were promoted by the government and local governments that focused on providing nursing care for physically weak children. In addition, the educational significance of both practices was clarified, such as being positioned as an opportunity for the quantitative and qualitative development of camp schools in Toyama Prefecture.
